I have a 2000 F-350 2WD with the 5.4 V-8. I have recently added a tansmission temp gauge and am adding an engine oil temp gauge as well. The tranny sending unit was a simple install since it fit in the service port on the driver's side of the tranny. My question now is, "is there an easy place to install the electronic sending unit for the engine oil temp?" I am looking for an easy way out from having to tap into the oil pan. I really do not want to pull the pan and weld in a fitting if I don't half to.
Not sure about a V-8, but on most blocks there plugs in heads you can install a sending unit. Mine was on the back side of the driver side head on the V-10. Some people tee off the factory sending unit but not recommended due to too many adapters and small leaks. Try a search on the subject!
Thanks for the input. I will have to look around the heads and see what I find. I have done a bunch of searches and have not come up with a good solution. In fact I found FTE while searching and figured that I would give it a shot.
Us guys with the diesels are lucky I have my oil temp sensor (1/8 npt threaded sensor) screwed straight into the oil filter housing. It had a bung there I took out and just screwed the sensor in after checking depth.
Is there a port near or on the filter housing ? I'm not familiar with the 5.4 !!
BTW It reads about 205 -208 as normal operating temp in a 7.3 PSD
I just had a look in the manual and if there is no bung you might be able to take off the oil cooler adapter (has the two lines connected to it just above oil filter if you have it ?) and get it drilled and tapped for the oil temp gauge sensor ?
Looking at the oil filter/cooler housing, it appears that the oil presure sending unit is tapped in just before the oil reaches the oil cooler. I should be able to remove the oil presure sending unit, install a tee and install the oil pressure sending unit on one side and the oil temp sending unit on the other. Any thoughts on this? It would be a lot easier then removing the pan or having to tap the oil cooler itself. I am ready to give it a try, but I remember a sign my highschool shop teacher had above his desk many years ago... "Learn from other's mistakes, you will never live long enough to make them all yourself."
If you do this, you will not get proper oil temp as the bulb of the sending unit will not be immersed into the oil flow, instead it would be measure the temp of the oil in the 'T' which is not moving. If you put the temp sender in where the pressure sender was you should be ok, but then you will need to find an oil pressure port on the block for the pressure sender.
I don't know a good solution for your situation, but I did want to alert you to the inaccurate readings you'd receive by using a 'T'.
