California catalytic converters

The powers that be in California have made it impossible to get catalytic converters anywhere but from the dealers so we end up paying $500 for a $200 part. Forget trying the wrecking yards as they are not allowed to sell them anymore.
I can buy one in Arizona at most parts houses for less than $200. They all state the same thing "cannot be sold in California" Is there a difference in a Federal catalytic converter and a California model? Wouldn't they be the same part?

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that CA and 49 state emissions are now the same. The difference is that for CA, every single vehicle is tested and for 49 states it's by lot or random.

I'd bet there's no difference in the converter.

In most states the cats cannot be sold as used. Federal EPA law.
What you suffer from is over regulation by the state of CA.
Look at the sorry state of affairs the state is in and you should see why.
As well, a cat assembly from a dealer in another state is the same as in CA as far a parts are concerned. Your's just has to be CARB approved.
The dumb state has different calibration standards for vehichle than in most other states.
Sorry for getting policital but your state is way out of common sense (to put it 'very' mildly).
Good luck.

You are wrong. CA legal converter have much higher precious metal loadings and have to be certified by engine family that they will handle the least clean engine in that family for at least 5 year/50,000 miles without loosing more than 5% efficiency or triggering a CEL.

In the remaining 49 states, converters are certified by engine displacement and gross weight. From there it is the manufacturers job to make sure the product actually works. If they are not working on particular applications, the manufacturer is supposed to figure out why and correct the problem.
