i have an 88 f150 2wd and i want to do a 4x4 project.my friend had axles out of a 93 Bronco, question is will the axles out of the bronco bolt up to my truck and what problems do you think i would run into doing something like this.
they work fine. its a fairly easy swap. all the holes are in the chassiz where they need to be.. just have to grind off rivets and replace them with bolts. Its nice if you can do the swap side by side so you got the vehicles for referance as to where stuff comes from and where it goes.
Only thing.....you will need to source a rear dshaft. the bronco will likely have a bolt on rear driveshaft, not too many trucks have them but some do. The rear springs are 3" wide instead of 2 1/2 like a 2wd truck has. you will also need the blocks from the rear.
ok,the bronco had an aod tranny, will my c6 bolt up to the transfer case and will i have to do anything different with any tranny mounts because of the transfer case?
if you're not using the Bronco trans you'll need a short shaft 4x4 C6....at least for parts to change yours over.
i think the crossmember is ok, the Tcase just hangs there, no support for it. if you plan on wheeling it offroad may not be a bad idea to grab the skid plate.
the axle will bolt straight up but youre going to need to turn your tranny 4x4 or find a 4x4 tranny then you need the t-case and driveshafts...and im not sure if the floor of your truck will have a hole for the shift linkage but if you dont want to cut one you can take that whole doghouse (the big hump in the floor) out of a truck with the hole for the shifter and repalce yours....
I replaced the axle in my 1994 4x4 with a straight axle conversion kit from superlift. It came with everything needed. If you really want a tougher truck, go with a straight dana 44 out of a 76 f-100 or something similar. This was a fairly easy project. I did everything with basic hand tools, a drill, and a side grinder.
You don't necessarily have to go to an old truck if you do a 1 ton D60 SAS. 80-97 F-350 front axles work. If doing a leaf SAS, it really doesn't take much work with some fab skills and a welder.
Check out the "GOD of leaf SAS" thread on fullsizebronco.com and you'll get all the information you need. There's links in that threads first post to pictures of a bunch of different swaps, scroll down and you'll get a well written write-up.
For one ton 60, I believe '78/9 F250/350 axles should work as well, though they might have the shorter leaf spacing. I can't remember the exact years for the solid D44, it's 70s F150s though.
I disagree with this. I *love* the TTB, and the swap would be a lot easier going TTB, it's all bolt up. Go 4x4 with the TTB first, then convert to SAS later on if you think you need that.
I swapped out my ttb for a high pinion Dana 44 out of a 79 f150 and its my favorite mod out of my whole truck. it was really easy too, the coils off the 79 bolt right up to the stock towers and the only fab work you have to do is the traction bar mounts and a couple of holes for the radius arms. the axle rides better on the road and there is way less maintenance.
