I have got a 1984 Bronco II with a 2.8 4x4 and have been looking into swapping out the front factory axle with a solid axle with leaf springs and shocks. I wanted to know if anyone has done this and if so how hard was it, what modifications were needed and what axles will work for my application. I also wanted to say this forum rocks!!!
I've seen it done a few times. Seems like most favor the extended radius arms with coil springs. That's probably the route I'll go when I do my straight axle swap.
I can't remember if anyone makes a SAS 'kit' for the BII, but I think I remember seeing that the early Bronco (pre-'78?) Dana 44 front and 9" rear axles were a somewhat direct bolt-in swap with a few minor modifications (?). I plan on eventually beefing up my driveline and suspension and going with a solid front axle. I'm curious if there are any rear leaf shackle reversal / revolving shackle kits out there... or possibly a coil-over/coil spring rear suspension conversions? *shrug*
its a heck of alot cheaper to find a eb or a 73-79 fullsize f150 or 78-79 bronco, and cut the front susp off and mod it to fit the bronco 2
.... yeah, ~$1800 for the kit and ~$2300-2500 for the axle... I'd much rather use junkyard parts and 'build' from there. I might try to find an early bronco D30 front axle... or go with my plan of converting a Jeep D30 front and/or modifying the front suspension.... I have many other things to do first before I even get to suspension and drivetrain, though... haha
Why go thru all the trouble just put Exployer or Ranger axles under it. they bolt in. Dana 35 front and a 8.8 in the rear and is better for ever day use and offroad. Plenty of gear and posi options are avalible. I have done both swaps early Bronco axles and Exployers. The Exployer axles you don't have to change drive shafts a big plus. Hope this helps. Ron
I'am doing one right now to a B2 with a V8. Dana 30 HP out of a YJ and stock YJ leaf springs. Put the axle under the leaf spring and got 5" of lift. It's taking more time to clear out the old susp. than to put in the new.
Never heard of D44's going for that kind of money find a 77 to 79 F150 or 78-79 Bronco with an auto in a junk yard and you'll find the axles you'll need for lot less money than ya think and you'll have a good old C6 for a tranny too.
Wow... this thread came back up to the top of the stack again...
mrford49: why eat up tires and have crappy articulation with a D35 TTB axle, lifted or not, extended radius arms/drop mounts or not..... when you can have a solid axle underneath and have fewer problems? I honestly don't mean to offend anyone, but the TTB and Twin I-Beam Ford front suspensions SUCK. I'm looking into doing either a modified early Bronco Dana 30 SAS or later-model Jeep D30 HP (coil springs or leaf) swap. The latter is a better idea... since the wheel lug patterns are identical
