driver side window

my driver side window wont go down. if i run direct power to the motor it goes down. even tho the wire i used for direct power is bigger than the wires used on the motor it heats up to the point of melting the casing on the wire b4 the window is all the way down. after its finally down the window switch works to roll the window back up. i tried a few junkyard switches with no luck. it seems when i press the switch theres no power at all on the down. the battery gauge doesnt move. when i press the up i can hear the motor try to roll the window up, even tho its already up, and the battery gauge drops a bit. just wondered if maybe the switches i tried could have been all bad switches, or if theres a different problem. checked all the fuses already too. maybe it has something to do with the auto-down function of the switch? i have no idea. just wish i didnt have to get out of the truck @ 4:30 in the morning to go into tim hortons instead of the drive thru. lol.
