When driving on the highway if I lift suddenly off the accelerator or when when driving anytime if I lift suddenly I hear a loud groaning coming from the engine compartment...can anyone relate or understand it?
We call them turbo farts. It's basically excess boost pressure being relieved through the intake when you lift off the throttle suddenly. If it only occurs when you let off while under load, it's completely normal.
Groaning is different then a turbo fart I would think. Turbo farts sounds more like a "chuffing" noise. Its the air pressure suddenly building up when you let off the throttle, forcing its way back out the turbo intake and causing the turbo impeller to rapidly slow down and start spinning backwards, as the pressure goes down the turbo stops and starts going back the normal direction again. If there is still enough residual pressure left the cycle will repeat it self perhaps a few time in rapid succession.
It is not completely normal and made indicate sticking VGT vanes, the rapid reversing of the turbo impeller can also cause damage.
However, like I mentioned earlier "groaning" seems to be a completely unrelated issue.
