My front axle is making a groaning like humming noise when the truck is cold and first starting to drive it. It does it when speeds are at 30 mph and under and goes away when putting it in 4WD. It sounds like the hubs but I'm not sure. The dealer hasn't been able to duplicate it because they haven't kept it overnight. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this happen to their truck, and if so, was it fixed and what was the issue. Like I said, I think it may be a vacuum issue to the hubs, but not sure.

Hi efx4,
Let's see what I can do to help quiet the humming noise. How many miles are on your truck? I'll get to work on some options to assist.
I have a 2012 F-150 Lariat with the EcoBoost engine. 18,300 miles. Mine is doing the same thing. Rubbing/groaning noise that I can feel in the steering wheel. Comes and goes. Contacted my dealer who says he has seen a few of these complaints. Source unknown, but he thinks it is a seal...
Crystal, would you add me to the list as I want to find out what this is....My dealer is Gibbons Ford in Dickson City, PA
Thanks for responding, efx4. I'll push this up the line to your regional customer service manager. To get the ball rolling, PM me your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership.

Hi Buck 1,
Did you go to your dealership for diagnosis or have you just spoken with them about this? I recommend going ahead and having them take a look; once they've done that, let me know and I'll do what I can to assist.
I called the dealer as he is 60 miles away. He stated he knew of a few vehicles with this issue. The District Rep said they thought it was some type of seal...but not sure. The dealer asked me to give him some time and call back. BTW..I have purchased 10 vehicles from this dealer with no issues whatsoever...

I just went through this same issue, third time. It was the hub and IWE actuator. My actuator goes every odd winter (water gets around the casing, when it freezes at night, it eventually damages the actuator). In my case the actuator will go, then if not fixed right away, the hub will heat up and become damaged, not to mention the rotors will warp.
If you jack up the truck on the side you are hearing the noise, turn the truck on, let idle if you can turn the wheel and your halfshaft/cv joint doesn't turn, then your actuator is good, and you may only need a new hub. Hubs are pretty wheel priced in the aftermarket. Hope this saves you some time.

My 2012 did this exact thing (among other things).
My new 2014 does it also! Very frustrating. I have not taken my new rig in because it's the exact same sound/noise as the 2012, and my local dealer could never duplicate. He said he couldn't find any information on it either; Just search the Ford forums and it's not an uncommon issue.
I just received my truck back from the dealer, and they told me it was the front wheel bearings. They re-packed them and said all was good. I'm not convinced this was the real issue, but with the warmer weather here, the noises from the front wasn't always happening. They did say that they were able to duplicate my concern and that the service department has seen this issue before.
I'm looking on the bright side of things; I will be ordering a 2015 before the deadline this summer anyway.
