Front Hub Questions

I just notice it when i go over bumps in the road. Sounds like ball joints but they checked out find, also when you spin the wheel there is no girding noise like bad bearings. The hubs are shot however, i can not spin them and i tried to clean them up. I plan on replacing with aftermarket manuals. I was just wondering if the hub assembly was bad. I suppose I could just try the needle bearing. Also how do you tell if the axle shaft is shot?

Milemarker 449SS hubs are currently $94.50 from Summit Racing (see eBay). I just got a set and they look entirely stout enough and are priced more like Dana 44 hubs than Dana 50/60 hubs.
