I just got the hub bearing assembly pulled out and the needle bearing in it was pretty much non existent! When I removed the warn hubs there were what I thought were metal shavings behind the warn hub. Turns out I think it was pieces of the needle bearing. The outer axle shaft was scarred up a little and I'm wondering if it would be okay to take some emory cloth and smooth out the burrs or do I need to replace the outer part of the axle shaft? Also the warn hubs were dry as powder inside and had alot of rusty dust in them. Are they suppose to be greased? Here are some pics. You can see what's left of the needle bearing on top of the hub assembly and you can also see the two pieces of what was left of the outer seal. Somebody treated this truck really bad before I got it!
Well personally , when I take my front end apart and it looked like that , I'd replace the outer shaft and all the other parts too then I would know that all was good inside and not have to worry about it .
Yeah I pretty much knew that, just wishful thinking I guess. Money is kind of tight right now especially since I'm also buying a remanufactured ZF6 for it. Am I correct in thinking that there is no difference in the axle shaft in a 2000 F250 and a 2000 F350? If so I found one at a salvage yard pretty cheap.
I know it sucks. but it will not last a week if you only put bearings in it..
Install new ends and hubs. The trapped water that took out the needle bearings most likely got in to the hub bearings also.. I would not trust those hubs the way they look.. Not good..

I'm almost positive the outer part of the shaft would be the same. Knock out the u joint and change outer section if the inner part of the shaft is different. But the whole shaft may be identical and replacing the whole thing would work.

Yeah I have a new hub bearing assembly, outer seal, and dust seal to put on, I was just real disappointed to see the axle shaft in that shape. I guess all that carnage in there explains the noise it was making in 4wd. I kinda figured the needle bearing was bad and I knew the outer seal was because it was just flopping around in there.
I'll go check out the shaft at the salvage yard tomorrow. Hopefully the whole shaft is the same, $75 bucks for the whole thing.
