i have a 77 highboy and the gear shifter on the steering column broke, and just moves freely. it goes into gear when manually shifted at the trany and even at the bottom of the column under the hood, but between the shifter and bottom of the column is the problem. it looks like there was a cable coming out of the column under the dash, im not sure, am i going to have to take the whole column out to fix this thing??
sounds like the problem is the shift tube
you will have to pull the steering wheel, remove the shift lever, slide the shift tube out
will probably find the welded piece on the top that the lever fits into is broken off
think you can still buy a new one............
thanks for your input. I took it all apart and found that there is a small rectangular key that locks the collar to the tube that goes down to the linkage, that little dime size key had fallen out due to a broken housing on the collar. I got a collar and put it on. everyting works great now. i just had the thing all apart trying to figure out what caused the tube to come out of the linkage, turns out it was very small and simple, right in front of my face. THANKS AGAIN.
I remember when my column shift screwed up for the second time. I decided to go with a B&M Light Truck Mega Shifter. Glad I did. No problems with that since.
But electrical problems will nearly make me blow chunks.
thanks for the tip, i will definately have to check that out. i mean everything works good, but it is still kinda loose from age i guess. it would be nice if it were tight like a new one. its funny you mentioned electrical stuff. i have had a hard time to say the least with the electrical in this truck. i guess when you get somehting so old its just been cut into so many times it comes with the territory. i cant get my bright lights to work currently. any tips?
Things do tend to get a bit rusty from age. You might try fooling with your dimmer switch a bit. Take it loose from the floor and wire brush on the bottom of it and on the floor. Maybe even use a little dilectric grease on it, when reinstalling it. Tap on it with your foot pretty hard to see if they try to come on. Maybe even replace it if you never have.
I haven't been into that in a while. If that don't work, you might have to check the harness out under the hood. Good Luck!!
a new dimmer switch is less than $10, mine was corroded on the bottom where it mounts to the floor pan, actually corroded through so you could see the contacts, and still worked usually
just replaced it and all the mysterious headlight problems went away
