I pulled into the milk store ,and shifted into park and theshift lever went too far . I got it home . The trouble is in the column somewhere . Does this mean that I will have to replace the whole column ?

If the shift lever is no longer engaging the trans, the usual cause is the 'pot metal' shift collar the lever fits into. It has an internal 'bridge' that connects it to the shift tube.
The bridge breaks apart, the shift lever flops around.
D5TZ-7228-A (replaced C5TZ-7228-A & C9TZ-7228-A) .. A/T Shift Collar / Available from Ford.
The shift lever isn't floping around . But I guess I will start by pulling off the steering wheel . Just not sure what the best approach is ( should I take the column all the way out or work on it in place ?) ,so I will start at the wheel and work my way down and see what happens .
At the bottom of the column under the hood is the manual control selector lever the shift rod from the trans attaches to. In this lever is a snap in plastic bushing.
If the bushing cracks apart, the shift lever will not engage the trans.
If the shift lever can still be shifted from Park thru the gears (but does engage the trans), it's either that bushing or has to do with linkage on the trans.
It sounds like the shift tube has a broken spot welded piece that the shift lever engages
after steering wheel, turn signal, and shift collar are removed, the tube slides out of the column
you can either get a new shift tube or weld the piece back on......best a TIG job
Good call on the collar . I ordered one from partsguyed . It will go from Memphis to Washington and then to me in Colorado Springs in about 10 days .
I am having trouble getting the pin out that holds the shift lever . What is the best way to drive it out ?
It is almost back together. There was a learning curve on this one .
I ordered the part from Partsguy three weeks ago .They had to order the part from Tenn. The part got to Washington state and somehow my order fell through the cracks. Partsguy did their best to make up and sent part 2nd day air on Friday . I called on Tuesday and my shift collar was in Kentucky. It arrived in Colorado Springs 21 days and several trips back and forth the contenental U. S.
The hole closer to the floor board for the wiring was not big enough to pass the cresent plug through so I had to enlarge it somewhat . The shifter is still stiff but I imagine that will ease with some grease and use .

So let me get this straight....your shift lever still put the tranny in gear but at the same time the lever was floppy/hard to shift at times/and the gear spacing on the column was messed up while shifting between gears?
I ask because I think I might have the same problem and was going to tear into it real soon but have no idea how to fix anything on a steering column.
Pull the steering wheel . Get some extra slack on the turn signal assembly wires and take that off and then you can see if the shift collar is the problem .You can also order a collar from Autokrafters.Good Luck !
