1990 F250 4x2. I read on the forum you should remove the soupbowl for better proformance. OK I understand more air in, what I don't understand is why did Ford design the air cleaner this way I always have a fear when I start modifying that I'm going to do something I should have just left alone. I'm hoping you guys can give me the answer. Thanks
It's an air silencer, about every vehicle since the '80s has one - it somewhat hurts airflow actually, but it reduces the "whoosh" sound from the air rushing through the ducting and such so the passengers don't freak out. About the same idiotic reason as why all automatic transmission shift like crap from the factory (slushboxes indeed), and why the oil pressure gauge on the '87-'96 trucks is just an idiot gauge and don't show any real pressure - customer comfort and satisfaction
don't be afraid of loosing that thing.i cut mine off before she even hit the road Barry.
searching show's it's a silencer like stated, and only for idle at that, iv read.
i didn't notice any noise increase, then again i had only run it a few times at that point.
it's nothing you want that's for sure.more air,the better.
Actually there's a better way - many 6.9 trucks came with air boxes that are restricted at the bottom opening (where they meet the intake plenum), those have lids with no soup bowl. So the best combination is one of those lids with a non-restricted 7.3 air box, which is exactly the setup I run in my truck.
i guess if you wanted to save the original lid.but what for? its not worth anything, and will just take up space as you'll never touch it again lol.the hopes that when you sell the truck, you can throw in the factory lid so it's original again? it wont earn you a penny lol.
Nope, nothing like that - I just happened to find a lid like that in the junkyard, and for $1 it was well worth my time compared to the mess of cutting up my factory lid (which was consequently scrapped). And I have no plans for selling my truck, I'm gonna keep her till one of us kicks the bucket! lol
