This is on my 96, but I know some of yall have a very good knowledge of the E4OD. Ok so I had a tranny fluid leak. Looked like it was coming outta the pan so I dropped the pan and replaced the filter gasket and tranny fluid. There was only about half a gallon of fluid in the pan and filter. The fluid was a little dark but not really a burnt smell and no abnormal metal shavings. It looked like fluid that was 10k miles old. I last replaced it 10k ago. I put two gallons of fluid in it. The computer at the parts house said it took 6.2 qts for just the pan but when I put that in it did not seem to be showing on the dipstick so I put the rest in. Now I have a bad leak coming out of the inspection cover. I drove back to the parts house (1 mile away) to get more fluid and it leaked all the way. My buddy was sittin at a stop light next to me and saw a fair size puddle, but when I checked at the parts house it was just above cold on the stick. Sorry for the long story, but the question I have is, is there a place where excess fluid bleeds off there or is there a place that my tranny is leaking?
If it is coming out of the inspection cover with the pipe, then that would indicate front seal or torque converter is leaking. Done any backing up with a heavy load on or trailer behind. 96 might have the larger pan with drain plug??....... 4x4s have larger than 2x4s.
Found this in my files.......
The converter seal failed due to overheating , the number one reason is slippage of the torque converter clutch at road speed, however it can also happen during in town towing when the converter generates the most heat. Search the web for SUPERIOR TRANSMISSION they have a pump modification kit called a code 62 kit a larger cooler is also a plus but under no means should you bypass the radiator cooler it is hard to remove heat from any oil an air only cooler is not efficient enough due to the volume of fluid that passes through it the coolant in the radiator transfers the heat from the trans fluid more efficiently than the air only cooler then it can reduce it further
