Transmission Problem

I just put a trans in my truck from a donor truck with about 90,000 on it. I'm having a few problems with it, its shifting weird but im assuming thats because it hasnt relearned the shift point yet, since I only drove it about 3 miles so far. But my main question is why am I not able to manually downshift it? Like I cant put it in 1st or 2nd gear no matter how fast im going. Even if I put it in 1st it'l still shift like its in drive. could this be a valve body concern?

Have you checked for codes? I'll bet there is one for the transmission range sensor. It's the sensor on the side of the trans where the shifter cable attaches.
