I bought a set of newer guages for my 78, out of an 89 econoline van a few months back. When I got them, everything was plug and play, and the guages work fine, but I cannot get the speedo cable to seat into the back of the speedometer. These guages are supposed to be a direct swap right? Did they use different cores?
The outter shaft of the cable fits over the male end of the speedometer just fine, but it stops about an 1/8" or maybe a little more from seating completely, therefore I get no speed reading. When I look into the cable, the core is flexed down a little, so I figured that since its not "centered" that maybe it was binding on the outside of the male end of the speedo and stopping it from going in, so I put a little grease on it to try that, and no bueno. I also got a little screwdriver to put in the hole of the speedo shaft to try and hold it center so it could go in, with no luck there either.
If no one understands what I'm saying, I understand haha.
I would really appreciate some knowledge, I like to know how fast I am going!
Did you pull the inner cable out to make sure it's not broke? Also, does the new speedometer actually work (does it spin when you move it with your fingers).
I don't think the inner cable is broke, it worked just fine before the swap. Only had this problem with these new guages. I have not checked the new speedo though...when I got it, they didn't pull the old speedo cable off, just cut it. Stupidly I just tossed that part, should of kept it for a comparison.
I do remember though, that it was seated flush with the back of the speedometer, but with my speedo cable, I can feel with my finger that it is not flush, at least...I think I can.
As soon as I get a chance, I'll pull the guage cluster out and look at the back of the speedo. See if I can get something down in there to spin it.
