I'm having speedo problems on my '48 F-1. It binds and stops working when I back-up. I checked the speedo itself already, and it seems OK, so when the binding happens, I loosen the cable at the speedometer, pull the cable out of the sheath slightly until it moves freely and then re-connect. It then works fine, until, of course, I back-up again!!! The problem seems to be where the cable connects to the transmission under the truck. I bought a new cable which I have yet to install because I was wondering if there is anything else under the truck I need to replace to prevent this from re-occuring. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks.
Your cable may have a fray in the core that moves ok one way and not the other. Pull the core out from the cab end and inspect. If it has any frays or kinks, it's bad. All that's in the tranny is the drive and driven gear. If there was a problem there, you'd see it going forward also. I'm betting on the speedo cable.
On the Bonus Built F-1's, the speedo cable makes a hard 90 right above the tranny. Depending how you have the cable routed, it can really wear the cable. When you put in your new one, make all turns as long as possible. Make sure the ferrule at the trans is square and tight.
