Has anyone towed with the Ford Installed brake controller yet that ships with the MAX towing package on their F-150's? The interface seems pretty basic but there is talk that it actually is computerized and provides ABS-like brake controller for the trailer.
I towed with my 05 SD diesel with the Integrated Brake Controller. It's everything it's billed to be. The ABS does indeed go to the trailer with it. The F150 IBC is designed to work the same as the SD one. The 2010 ones look different than the 09's did, but work the same. The new ones use the message center in the instrument cluster.
I like the looks of the 09 better, but regardless, they are sweet. I also had an 05 F350 PSD, now an 09 F150, both with the TBCs, and they are the best TBCs I've ever used. Very nicely integrated with the truck.
If you look at my truck below, you will see I have the packages you may be getting. It pulls like a dream, controller works flawless. If hook up to my travel trailer (6.6K lbs) or my flatbed loaded (10.5K lbs), it tells me if everything I need to know. I have running in the mountains of PA lately and has not failed me yet. You will have fun the first time you get engine breaking out of the 6 speed trans. At first I didn't understand what was happening but now (after reading the manuel) I use it to my advantage. The whole system works very well. I am a happy camper. Chris

Not on the F-150, although I do have it, but on the 6.0 I have used the TBC and it works great. One of the many good points of that truck that I like. I doubt I'll ever need it on the 150 as I don't have bumper trailers for that thing to pull and I don't see myself renting them, but I have it on there just in case.
As far as T/H mode, I actually like how it works on the 6.0 better then the 5.4. That's a comparision with both trucks unloaded, so the advantage that the 6.0 might have is weight versus the 150.
Sorry gang, I should have read all the replies above! Now I am looking forward to my first tow. What is it I should expect to feel when it breaks out of 6 in T/H mode, perhaps I can avoid the fear lol.
One other things about the brake controller. The interface is pretty basic, just + and -
On my Husky Excursion you sort of picked a profile, what are the buttons on this one for?
So... do you have to "dial it down" every time you move from highway to a small town like you used to have to with my old brake controller to avoid the lurching? The Husky did everything by reading the amount of pressure you put on the brakes in the truck... no adjustment necessary once you set the sensitivity, is the + and - just there to achieve a setting or if you want more juice?

thanks for all the advice y'all

Once you set it, unless you change the the trailer in some shape or fashion, your good to go. It does read the pressure that you put to the brakes and sends out the corresponding pressure to the trailer brakes. What you do to get the right gain setting is you try a number and then you slide the lever to the left. Depending on the reaction you get from the trailer, you either dial it up or down. Do this going very slowly and preferably without traffic. I typically find which setting causes the brakes to "scream" and then dial it down one, maybe two depending on what trailer it is. When your setting the TBC up, you don't need to tap on the truck brakes, just slide the "lever" over. Just go very very slowly.
That's great, so basically once the optimal setting is achieved (screaming brakes then back one notch) you are set to go and the system remembers it. Awesome.
Thanks for all the advice, just 2 weeks before I pick up my trailer, I am dying to try it out!
I did read the manual on Tow/Haul mode but I am unsure when to use. I towed with a Ford Expedition and it had the Overdrive Off feature and I basically towed all the time with it off as that was suggested in one of these forums. But is T/H mode different than this? Would you just engage it on steep hills, or would you use it the entire time you are towing an 8000 pounder.
T/H mode does not lock out O/D. It extends the tranny shift points, enabling "you" to stay in the powerband longer and it allows for engine braking as well. O/D is still on.
Back to the TBC. The system remembers where you last left off. If you haul basically the same loads, but you have a couple of different trailers(like I do), I would write down what the settings are for each one that way it's easier to get back to them. However, if you don't hit any of the buttons and you only haul the one trailer and pretty much the same load all the time, then you'll be set.
