Brake Control Trailer Plug Under Dash

I have a 2001 F150 Lariat with a Trailer Tow Package. Under the dash there is a plug for the trailer brake controller. I went to plug it in and I find on the Ford side there is a brown wire. On the brake controller plug side there is no wire where the Ford brown wire is in the (Ford) plug.
Do I need that?

I don't think so, my 01 was a plug and play insulation. I think it is optional for back-up lamps.
