like kevin said, have the head done, because it is off. use a good felpro gasket when putting it back together, or you will be doing a head gasket in a short amount of time later.your ticking is probably valve train related, especially when added to the dent in tour valve cover. the 300 does not like high rpms, so you floated out the valve train, wich means you pumped up the lifters. one never recovered, because it was over extended. you can go to any parts house you want, and buy a new set of lifters, and put them in. normaly I would say replace the cam too, but in your case, the lifter failed due to abuse. use caution on high preformance parts on your year truck, the computer is set for pretty much what is there. changeing cams, and injectors etc, will cause the truck to run poorly, and eat gas unless you change computers, or permiters in yours. if you want a mud boggin monster get a 460, or a diesel, you will be much happier, just use yours for transportation, or light work
my truck did overheat oncecause the fan got caught on the shroud so thats why im converting to e fans
the guy told me that this is a weak point in these engines cause it can get hot up their, is this true?
the cracks are above the #3 cyl. between the valves.
what would have also caused this was my #3 injector quit working so it was either dry firing or dumping too much gas it so then that increases the heat
new head he wanted $100 but went down to 75$, better than going to junk yard and finding out it is cracked. he had it on stock
I have heard the EFI heads are prone to cracking. That is prob. why the machine shop stocks them. They know people will need them. It's a good price too.
here with a few, i love these threads where anybody, any age, starts in on one of our 300,s. where they have never been before. so you boys will know. i do NOT think i know it all. actually, i learn something every time i read one of these. from old vets, and even brand new newbies, its all good and a lot of fun, i am pushing 60, i have a 300 now, my family has always used 300,s for our blue collar work our whole lives. 35 years +. they are brutes, BUT they are notorious for warping the head and cracking the head when overheated for whatever reason, the higher and longer the heat, the more severe the damage. sometimes it only takes 1 severe episode to make this happen, the first indication is that dreaded ticking, it got to be almost a game of sorts over the years, one of the trucks would start that an then, alright guys who,s turn is now, who ran her hot, come on fess up. ---what me no way boss wernt me grin. i did the one last year.was the same for carbs in the early stuff. so it happens alot so do not feel bad, now i have a ? that you vets may know. has there ever been a chip hipo available anywhere or can you access the box in any way with a puter and change parameters. or is she just set and locked solid. paul
Let me guess: Cheaper and better? like ... everything for sbc?

hypertech has a set up, I have never used it though
thats interesting, tx for that. i want to look into it for my efi, and if so it would allow the op to maybe run a little stouter cam if he wants. he,s asking very good tech ? s. he,s got energy, got her outta da truck, its fun, i love it even if it,s not mine. paul
brought up a great point, make sure you bring old head home, you can grind on that without fear, see how FAR and WHERE you can go before you hit water, it would really be cool if you knew someone with a big bandsaw, slice that baby up where you can really where she is thin. and then, port that head bigtime. i have been told jb will fix a bo-bo on the intake side but NOT on the ex cuz it will not take the heat from raw combustion gasses,
i would like to port it more. i just want to get this done and put back together soon cause i am only doing this cause i have garage space to work with until my dad gets back from his trip in 2weeks.
i forgott to take pictures of the old way the head was which i hate not doing cause it is a big change but if you look at the inside look of t he valve on the 2nd pic that is what it did look like before P&P
i will be putting a v8 TB on the truck so i will be porting the intake a little bigger
on the old head i did a little better job on the combustion chamber but on the new one it looks good just could use a little touch up and i did do a better job on the intake ports.
