prepping for cam
prepping for cam
im gonna take my valve cover off soon so i can replace the gasket, so i would like to install some parts that i would need for a cam while i have it apart. i am probably going to get a comp cam. what parts should i install while i have the cover off? i know a new cam usually calls for new rockers, valve springs, and hardened push rods. is it uncoventional to do these parts first? id like to get my valve cover gasket replaced since its oozing all over the place, thats why i want to do this stuff first.
also, where can i get a cam with the timing gear already pressed on?
-all help is appreciated

Other than the valve springs, you're going to have to remove everything again when you do the cam. Me, I'd just wait rather than do it twice. Then you can buy the K-kit and get all the parts you need in one box, no worries. Well, except the rocker arms and they don't have to be replaced. There aren't a lot of easy options for pedestal rockers on the 300 other than stock replacements.
I doubt you'll find a cam with the gear pressed on already, probably have to find a local shop with a press...

If I were you, I would buy that kit either from Comp, or Summit Racing. That way I know exactly what I am getting, and the quality of what I'm getting. AND, they stand behind it. Ebay, you never know. Penny wise and pound foolish can come back and take a huge bite out of your wallet when working on engines.
It's actually cheaper at Summit.

Here's a writeup I did when I did my cam install.

It's not very difficult to press the cam gear on yourself. Get it nice and hot (around 300°) and grease the end of the cam. Stand over it with some hot pads and just press the gear on. If it doesn't go on all the way, there's a threaded hole on the end of the cam you can use to tighten it down further (pics in the link above).

okay i will probably buy the kit off summit. can i use my stock pushrods?
as for pressing the new cam gear on, i work at a mechanic/engine shop and i can get it pressed on there. i will probably have the head milled and maybe ported too. how hard is it to pull the gear off the crankshaft? can i use the cam gear from the kit with the stock crankshaft gear?

Unless the pushrods are bent or you mill the head a bunch they can be reused.
The K-Kit should come with a new timing set so you'll replace both pieces. The crank gear's usually not bad, maybe a pickle fork if it doesn't slide right off.

I did an article for True Blue Trucks magazine about how to hot rod the 300. You might want to contact them about back issues. It will help with a lot of your questions.
Now I see your truck is a 92. You need to think about what is computer compatible. There are a lot of things that can't be done with the efi and computer controlled 300's. Research is the key.
I took .020" off the block, and .020" off my head. That got me 9.2:1 cr, and I run cheap gas.

would a compression bump be computer compatible? i wasnt concerned about the computer since the 260h seems to be a fairly mild cam.
Tech. everything is EFI Compatable. If just means tuning and correcting the ECU. I plan on doing much more than th OP and have a 93, but I also am looking into a new ECU. Or a MS (Mega Squirt) Set up but of coarse that throws its own problems in the air when using a E4OD.
