as mentioned before knock can be caused by the distributer being advanced too far, pulling the plug wires will work. If it continues to knock after pulling the wires it is not a timing issue. A rod knock is generally lower in pitch then a knock caused by timing. If I recall correctly a timing knock would get worse sounding the more rpms you turn and the rod knock will be more noticeable at lower rpms.
I'm not sure why it would get better, but as formentioned if you remove the wires and it gets better that will eliminate the timing knock. Is the knocking noise high or low pitched and were is it coming from in the engine? You can use a wood dowel or something to listen to where the knock is located if you do not have a stethascope.
It could still be a fuel issue as well, just because you put new fuel in it does not mean it's good, it might have water in it. Just a thought.
Is it Automatic??
Does it do it setting still in gear??
Does it do it setting still with Throttle Application, Brakes on??
Do you have to put a load on the motor??
Can you free rev it and get it to do it?? (ie: snap the throttle)

i go to the same station everytime, and i went there with both my trucks and my dodge has no knock at all, and was actually a bit more peppy with the 93 from the same pump i was at with the ford.

auto yes, in gear yes, when i had a vacum leak yes but i fixed that. the trucks weight is enough load to get it to do it. and it ONLY happens when im inside teh truck in any gear and applying the gas to go faster.

only thing iv done with the wires is make them 8mm
in my experiance when it sounds like a little man with a hammer its no good. bent rods, valves, shot bearings. could be a lot of things. could be a weak oil pump starving the heads for oil. i would pull the plugs and look down in with a light. see if the piston head is banged up. could be a broken piston ring and a little chunk of it is up on top of the piston. just saw that in a 350 last month on an engine tear down. maybe pull the valve covers off and look to see how dry it is or a bad valve.
Do you have a way to capture the sound ... Video, Audio recorder ... Something so the peeps on here can hear it, It is extremely hard to diagnose sounds from explanations.
