ICP question..potential for damage?

So I have determined that I have a faulty ICP sensor, and occasionally my idle jumps around because of it. Am I going to damage anything by continuing to run it while I wait for the replacement to arrive? What if I have to tow something, will I be potentially causing bigger problems?

Jason,I don't have an answer but I do have a question...when you say your idle "jumps" around, how much fluctuation are you talking?Bump if anything....

I have a bad ICP. I have driven around with it 4 months now and the check engine light has come on because three times but it disappears. My idle has always gone up and down about 50 rpms or so randomly. I also have oil in the sensor. I have towed with it being bad and so far the truck is running fine. I just got a brand new ICP off ebay for $70 and free shipping so you may want to look into that and it is a Ford one too...

I also confirmed today I have a bad ICP sensor. My idle jumps about 50 to 10 rpms.

I plan on ordering a new sensor ASAP. I was told Ford refined the sensor, does anyone know if there is a new part number? I have been searching the web for a sensor, but I dont want to buy the wrong one.

The revisions have more to do with the shape of the sensor than anything else. The old ones take a wrench or crows foot to remove or tighten down. The new ones have a large nut on the bottom that allows you to use a socket on them. I wouldn't worry too much about the part number. The old one will work just fine. The new one is just a little easier to install if you have a socket that large.

Jason, my F250 has had a bad one for almost 20k miles....the idle was up about 100-200 rpm at red lights, and returned to normal when I put it in park or neutral. It didn't bother me too much, so I just never messed with it.
So I would say you have some time...unless it annoys you.

That's good to hear. I was afraid I was gonna cause some damage. Robin and I have something in the works, so I will replace mine soon, and I will let y'all know if it smooths out.

Hey guys how do you know if you have a bad ICP sensor besides oil in sensor and idle flucuation? Can you check it with a scanner?

Thanks

Yes, but it has to be able to read Ford codes specific to the powerstroke. If you go to Autozone or one of those type stores that offer to read your codes for free, there equipment won't read our trucks. Even though our trucks use an OBDII port, they aren't OBDII compliant, they use a different system. I borrowed Mikes (big popppa's) Superchips tuner that he had used for tunes before he got his DP tuner. It will read Ford powerstroke codes. That is how I determined for sure, that it was my ICP. The code it keeps reading is P1280.

Update, went to the mailbox and Robin (Payson) had sent me the spare ICP that he had. I just spent 30 minutes taking apart the intake and hot side intercooler tubes, swapped the 2 ICP's and BAM!! Smooth idle. No check engine light. Hooked up Mike's (Big Poppa) Superchips and cleared out the P1280 that was still there and so far no DTC codes left. I am going on a little 1 hour trip up to New Freedom PA. today for a visit to one of my cousins, so we will see if I have any other issues.

Please everyone give some reps out to Mike and Robin. Both of them help out so much on here and they have helped me solve a very annoying issue for me in the midst of my wife's expy causing me big issue too. Lot's of mechanical stress the last 10 days.

I just had mine replaced at the dealership...was losing a lot of oil and had no time to diagnose where it was coming from. They replaced the ICP sensor among other things. Part number they used was F6TZ 9F838A.
