dumb q, jack rating?

...thinking about buying a shop jack which will work with my '78 F-150, auto, 4x4. I can use one rated for 2.5 tons, right? Just going one corner at a time w/ 6-ton jack stands? It doesn't need to be rated for the entire GVWR for any reason?

Your not lifting the whole weight of the truck so you would not need that kind of rating. I will say though that my 8400GVWR truck becomes hard to pump the corner even with a 3 ton. It does it, but certainly would not trust it for anything. It was a cheap HarborFreight aluminum full size one though. Even though it is rated for 3 ton it is so light weight that the pump itself is probably not of the highest quality. I have a feeling I could lift it with little effort on a 2 ton all steel quality jack.
