I bought a cheap floor jack from walmart for $15 and it is rated at 2 tons. I was wondering what it will actually pick up because one front corner of my 1976 F-100 seemed liked it was all the jack wanted
The weight rating is what the hydraulics can handle, but yeah, they are really hard to pump when they get up near their max. I usually just put a longer handle on it, but the correct thing to do is to get a jack properly rated for the job.
Using some rough figures, you've got about a ton and a half on the front end overall, so it should be safe to use that jack to pick up any corner of the truck. You know you're in trouble if it's opening the safety bypass valve before you're done lifting, and always use a jackstand regardless of how much the jack cost.
Something to watch out for with those its bitsy narrow jacks regardless of how good they are is that they can actually roll over on their side if large vehicles shifts a bit. Once I was workiing on the rear brakes, and released the e-brake to get the drum off. The driveline unwound a bit as the e-brake released and the vehicle moved about 3-4 inches forward, the chocks slid and it rolled the jack over on its side. I had in on jack stands or it would have been ugly.
