Didn't mean to be short with ya. The Zoodad mod requires cutting off the front section of the factory airbox. I used a re-cip saw. here's a couple of pictures. It was raining hard so I hope they look ok.
Sorry Skull... the pics and discription of the "Zoodad" you posted is not the Zoodad mod.
The original Zoodad mod involves cutting away a portion of the front core support in front of where the air filter housing is mounted. I spent a few minutes trying to search for a "how to" but my time is short. I have seen a correct Zoodad how-to here on FTE.

So with cutting off the front of the airbox it would almost be like a CAI wouldn't it? Geez I think I am going to do that instead of paying the hundreds for a CAI!

I guess I only did half of the Zoodad Mod. I'm sure the air turbulence(smoother air flow) is better with an aftermarket CAI. You also have to consider how and where you drive the EX. If I was four wheeling in the mud and water I would keep it stock. The mod that I did wouldn't be the greasest in lots of dust or wet area's. For me it works great. I do go off road,or should I say down some dirt roads during hunting season ,but that's it. Once you cut the stocker up you can't go back unless you buy a new or used air box. Or duct tape Ha Ha.

Actually cutting off the front of th airbox is more like a HOT air intake.
Cooler air is more important than volume of air. The stock intake plenum can move more air than the truck can ingest at WOT. However, if the intake temp get too high it will pull timing back...and therefore power.
I did the ZooDad on both my Excursions. The first time like the original and the second on the other side of the support (pics in my gallery). It was the second time that I got to actually measure intake temps before and after and noticed that the stock intake with the snorkel pulls ambient air. The ZooDad did have an effect on how quickly the measured intake temps dropped back to ambient after sitting idle (like in traffic or at a light). They dropped a bit quicker WITH the holes.
Thanks for all your input I had my friend at a local exhaust shop fix the 1.5 inch restriction and y pipe issue. I needed a new air filter so I bought the k&n so i dont need to buy a new 25 dollar filter all the time. I also raised air pressure up to 65 psi. I pulled a loaded utility and took a 150 mile round trip running between 65 and 75 and got 13.4 mpg. With the exhaust mod I have noticed more power on the lower end and more free flow on the high end. I hope to see a little better mpg once my foot lightens up a little but more power means more fun so you have to play a little right? Oh in responce to one question it has 35k on it and me my wife two kids and two dogs fit way better in my ex than my old crew cab with the shell i had. Well thanks again for the help and being welcomed into the ex family.
