What is the zoodad mod? Is it easy to do ? Thanks.
Didn't mean to be short with ya. The Zoodad mod requires cutting off the front section of the factory airbox. I used a re-cip saw. here's a couple of pictures. It was raining hard so I hope they look ok.
I bought my 2002 ex two months ago and now it is time to start upgrades. It is a v 10 with 35000 miles on it. I want to know about the k&n air filters and the new y pipe. I got under my ex the other day and what were they thinking i see 2 in pipes from each manifold and the last two or three inches before it goes into the y pipe it reduces down to an 1 1/4 or a 1 1/2 in pipe. Where can i find the replacement pipe what is a reasonable price and how much does it help? Thanks
If you want more out of the V10, your best and I mean BEST bet, is Mike at 5-Star tuning. Whether you want to do a CAI, exhaust, Y-pipe, or I think even headers, he's got a package that will work for you. His custom tuning for the V10s has it's owners singing his praises. There was actually a group buy not too long ago and not one person was disappointed.
Toreador, Can you elaborate? What is Mike at 5-Star tuning? A SCT Tuner?
Oh yeah that's right. Ford designed the restrictive air intake for maximum performance, and sound levels. I forgot, I'm sure the stock is waaaay better performance wise. (yeah right).
So what caused the improvement? (if there was one) You probably had a dirty filter, nobody else is getting an improvement.

YES! He uses and SCT X3 and I think the Livewire and can do the most amazing things the custom tunes he has. Some have reported a 1-2 mpg gain and a definite SOTP incerease. So from what I've read, it's definitely worth the money...give him Mike a call.
I've had the K&N on several vehicles - cars and trucks and have to say I've never noticed an MPG increase or a power increase. The sound certainly goes up... but that's about it. I purchased as it made sense financially to install a reusable filter vs. a paper filter on a vehicle I planned to keep for a long period of time.
Skull - did you do any other changes or maintenance when you installed the filter? I don't have one on my Ex yet - did the initial replacement with a regular paper filter just to get all of the basic maintenance up to date and complete.

At the time no. I remember 8-9 mpg,and my fuel gauge would be on 3/4 after only 20 miles. Now after a fill up its at 50-75 miles half full is always over 200 mi. A few months later I aired the tires up to 70 psi up from 45. Replaced all coils, boots, and plugs, did the zoodad mod . 2 months ago I filled up for a trip and went 576 miles on 39 gallons. 14.7 mpg at 70 mph. Not to bad. Thats all I've done.

How many miles did you have on the truck when you replaced the coils, boots and plugs? I just aired my tires from 65 to 85psi so I hope that helps the mpg. Maybe need to change the other stuff to. What brand did you use?
I am impressed with the mpg you are getting! 14.7mpg would be a dream! When I first got mine I got 80miles for a 1/2 tank!! Had a fuel injector cleaner done and was getting 12mpg but now (a couple months later + 2000 miles) I am back down to 9.5mpg.

The EX had around 100k on it. I bought all the coils and boots from Napa, and used autolite double platinum plugs. The reason I used napa is because that is what I used to put in the Police crown Vics and never had another coil failure. I had a bad coil on the Ex when I first bought it and it was sending RF signals to all the Ecu's, engine, body, abs. I had all kinds of codes. Narrowed it down to one coil that broke down internally. After that it was all good. I do use the Ford recommened 5-20 Motorcraft oil syn/dino
The 14.7 mpg was great, I started out in Eureka,ca with 3/4 of a tank, went to San Francisco, and back to Willits,Ca, before I fueled up. The Lie-o-meter was saying 17 mpg (yeee haaaw) that would have been nice. I don't tow,so I'm sure the numbers will be way lower if I did. The tire psi for me was the way to go. I also installed Bilsteins the yellow and blue ones at the same time. Even with the higher psi in the tires and E rated, it rolls smoother than my wife's Dodge Magnum R/T. I actually prefer to take the Big EX on a trip due to how comfortable it is.
