So I was doin some 4wheelin in my 98 expedition, and when i was driving home, i noticed the trans wouldn't shift up to 3rd or 4th. starts in first and goes to second smoothly.
I was up over the tires in water at one point.
checked the dipstick, and it looks very clean and at the right level.
any ideas? I was reading a bronco forum, and one guy said he replaced his alternator and fixed it.
How should I go about diagnosing it, I would like to avoid dropping the trans if possible.
yeah, the transmission seems to operate perfectly fine except for shifting up out of second.
It was hard to use the shifter, but i put it on the lift, and there was a stick jammed between the tranny and a support, took that out and the shifter feels good again.
is it possible that the selector position switch can get damaged and cause this? It doesn't look physically damaged.
If you put the truck back on the lift and unplug the transmission harness the transmission should start off in 4th gear. You can confirm this by looking at the speedo and rpms while running it on the lift. Keep in mind this will set codes for everything inside the transmission, but it will let you know if the transmission is capable of 4th gear.
During the harness unplugged test if the transmission only has 1st gear then the shift solenoid 1 has failed in the ON position. This will cause the transmission to shift like 1-2-2-1. Replace solenoid block.
If the transmission starts in 4th, I would start by cleaning all transmission electrical connections first, then drop the pan and look for debris.
Alright, I got it up on the lift, pulled the connector, and was staying in 1st when in Drive. This leads me to believe that shift solenoid 1 is stuck on.
Is there a way to test the solenoid?
and does anyone have directions on how to replace it?
and finally, can it be cleaned? or does it have to be replaced? and where do you get this part, since im guessing my local parts store wont have it.
