SO what's the final word in how much drag ought to be on the drums? The adjusters are backed to where the shoes just drag on the drums. I think that's about right. After a short drive home from my buddy's garage, I noticed the slightest hint of hot brake smell that dissipated fairly quickly. Does that sound about right?
Old girl doesn't know what hit her this weekend... first new brakes shoes and cylinders and now a nice clean rear end complete with new u-joints and a top off of gear oil.
After cleaning if off, I found that the bolts were not even finger tight. That probably explains the massive oil leak! I torqued all of those down and topped off the diff. She swallowed about 2 quarts or so.
The new u joints went in easier than I expected being my first time swapping them out. They do seem really tight in the drive shaft. Is that normal?
It's been a big weekend for Ugly Betty. Last weekend, I pulled the rear shafts and found out That one bearing was trashed. That story is over here. So, last night, I went over to pull a part and tracked down a new axle shaft. After finding the right axle with the right spline count, I went over to NAPA and got the right bearings. I took the axles and shafts over to a local machinist and had them press the bearings on.
While I had the shafts out, I pulled the third member out and put on a new gasket. This morning I put the new shafts in and bolted everything down. All is well with the rear end.
I took her out for a test ride and promptly noted grinding in the front end. UUHHHHGGGG! turned out to be just a little matter of NO BRAKE PAD! SO new pads went on and I picked up a new tranny filter kit to cure it's skipping issue. I'll put that on tomorrow. Feels so good to get back behind the wheel of the old lady. She's been on jackstands for almost a month now!
Today was another big day... New tranny filter. That was a pain! I don't think there will be grass growing in that spot this year.
After that mess, it was off to my friends house to put on the pair of new Flowmaster super44's I picked up on craigslist for $100. I'll post pics when the camera charges up.
With the mod from 2" pipe to 3", I've noticed a drop in low end power but once you get the revs up, HOLD ON!!!! She wants to fly! And the sound is amazing! Gonna wake the neighbors tomorrow morning.
Also dumped the busted rear bumper to put the new one on, but need to fab up a set of frame extensions to reach out to meet it.
Yeah, I think so. It's nice to have friends that know how to do things that are useful. It'd still be sitting in the driveway if it weren't for those guys.
So today, after driving the truck back in to work for the first time in weeks, I catch a whiff of a positively acrid smell from the right front wheel. Turns out the caliper was toast. So, today, she got new calipers on the front. Short of the front wheel bearings, i think that's about the last moving part left to change out on the axles! It never really ends does it.
After the new calipers went on, I only made one more trip before they started smoking again. SO this weekend will be new rotors. I will admit, I should have known better last week that the rotors were toast. They looked like the Ocean so rippled and wavy. Hopefully this will complete the work needed to keep her on the road long enough for me to get back to creature comfort mods. I would like to have paint on her before the summer is out!
So after losing a rear u-joint on the highway, I have learned to check the torque on all bolts put on by other people. So now the truck is back on the road and in 1 week she's got new rotors, master cylinder, u-joints, oil change, and tranny fluid top off.
Is there any good reason not to tap the tranny fluid pan to make changing the fluid less of a mess? Or do they just do that so people don't get confused and drain the tranny instead of the engine oil by mistake?
I learned that lesson when someone told me the electricity was off before I cut into a wire. Always check someones elses work. That stinks, but at least you are ok and the Dent didn't get any Dents
Alright, so I've made a decent ammount of progress and havn't updated this thread in a while. Since labor day, I have done a ton of work!
-Cut out the cancer in the rear panel and patched with Bondo,
-Rattle Can paint job
-New turn lenses, corner markers, and bulbs (only to find out there's a short in the wiring somewhere that keeps them from functioning properly)
-new brake master cylinder and vacuum booster
