I have been enjoying my new 07 for the past week or so and couldn't be happier (will have pics soon, I hope). I would like to hear about peoples experience with the bed extenders, since I have a 5.5ft box, I thought one might be handy. Are they easily removed and replaced? Like when I put my ATV in the back. I was figuring they should be around $300. I haven't had a lot of time to look yet. Thanks.
Cost about $500 at the dealer. Got mine online (eBay) a couple of years ago for ~$175 I think. The connection hardware was ~$40 from Ford. Easy to remove, Sometimes in the way, but very useful at times as well.
Thanks, does anyone have any pictures of theirs? I cant seem to find any good ones online. It seems that bestop is one of the more popular brands too. I would like a ford one, so i will check ebay as well.
OK, I just bought a used bed extender for my 07 F-150. I also bought the striker bolts I was told bolted right into the side of the bed, but the are way too small. It clips fine into the extender, but I can't figure how they hook to the bed.
I know it is possible to get access to the reverse side of the holes through the brake lights and was planning on just using some nuts to lock them in place, but they dont seem to fit any of the nuts at the Home Depot near me.
Before I do anything, I would really like to know how it was intended to be put on. Any details or pics would be greatly appreciated.
I bought my bed extender from craigslist for $100 bucks. I has some wear on it but overall in reliable condition. I was also thinking of adding some straps from an aftermarket bed extender for addition security.
Mine was an '06, so I presume the same, but... Does your bed have threaded inserts midway up for threading the pivot bolts in place? Mine did and the bolts mated right up. No need for nuts. Also had to add four gromets for the lock pins that keep the extender in the down position.
Soryy no pics. Would take some but my truck is in the body shop for the next MONTH!

Reason: added to
No bolts are in my truck bed and the bed extender cage has two locking pins at the top of the frame which locks into the upper or lower holes depending on position. Not four.
I can't imagine they know during production which vehicles will get the bed extender package. I had the impression they were more of an aftermarket feature that the dealerships put on, but I guess I could be wrong.
I meant there are four grommets for two pins. You use only either the top or bottom pair of holes depending on which position you have the extender in (forward or backwards).
Not bolts, but a hole on each side if the bed, each with the threads in them. At least I think they had threads in them. Guess it s possible the pivot bolt threads were self tapping. It has been ~3 years so I do not remember specifically.
TooL dad - OK, now that I got my bed extender hooked up, I understand what you mean about grommets. My bed didn't have any threds available for the middle set of holes (for the striker bolts) so I went in through the rear lights and used M10x1.5 nuts. The threads didnt line up with the nuts exactly, but they were the closest and a thread die made it all work out. After that, i noticed some looseness with the two locking pins, which is were the grommets come in. I will need to track down four of those now.
As a side note, I will probably buy a set of replacement strap for the bestop bed extender and use those as well for some additional security.
