rear axle thump

rear axle thump
a few weeks ago I was replaceing my brakes. When I got the left rear wheel I noticed that I could move the tire in and out, about a 1/4 inch or so and it made a thumping sound. I also begain to notice this when I make a sharp turn like pulling into a parking spot. Any Ideas ?

check the actual movement a little closer. the axle pokes into the center differential and a C clip is installed to hold it. Probably has about 1/8 inch end shake, not 1/4 inch. THe thump will be the C cllip hitting each side as you pull and push. It is much more important to see if there is any up and down movement--- should be zero. If you have much, the outer wheel bearing is bad and should also be noisy.
