I began hearing a thump, thump, thump when I turn left. It is almost like I can "feel" it in the floorboard. Could someone give me an idea of what it could be? Thanks so much to the great FTE!
does it kinda do it at idle just sitting mine does the same thing i can hear and feel it a little at idle and its worse when i turn left. it bugs the crap out of me and i cant figure out wat it is
Could this possibly be sway bar bushings? It only makes the noise when I turn. Applying the brakes does not stop the thump so I don't think it is a warped brake rotor. It does not thump when going straight so i don't think it is the bearings.
If it clunks in a straight line as you go over bumps, it could be the sway bar end links (common issue as the rubber bushings wear out).
If it does it when you are turning, it is probably ball joints. My truck makes a popping, grinding, clunking sound that can be heard and felt. I'm 99% sure that one of my ball joints is done. I can't complain, 180K out of the original ball joints is pretty good from what I've read.
After investigating further, I think it is the auto locking hub on the right side not fully disengaging. When I lock both hubs, I hear the same thumping noise louder. The right hub is very difficult to turn to lock while the left one turns freely. Dealership quoted $300 for the part ( I have a friend who can get me a discount, $235) and it looks like a piece of cake to install.
To get to this point, I jacked it up and turned the wheel. The wheel turned smoothly. It is not bearings, warped rotors or ball joints.

Has anyone done this job?
You can swap that hub in under 10 minutes. But, do yourself a favor and look into the Warn premium hubs, might save you some $ but you lose the ESOF capability.
Just some food for thought, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE U-JOINTS IN THE STUB AXLES!!!
I went through this same freaking thing last summer thinking it was the hub, blah, blah blah. In the end it was SIEZED u-joints in my stub axles that happen to sieze at just off center. Didn't give much grief rolling forward, but HOLY when I went to turn corners, because the stub is just off center, it gave a thump, thump, thump and bump feedback in the steering wheel.
new manual locking hubs fixed the thump! The Mile Marker 449S did not fit my truck so I had to run to Oreilly's and get Warn's. The install was very easy.
