Thumping front end when accelerating from a stop
Thumping front end when accelerating from a stop
I have a 2000 Expedition with 116,000 miles on it. Lately, when I accelerate from a stop I feel a thump..thump..thump in the front end. The faster I accelerate from a stop the harder the thump. I just put two new tires on the rear and now it is a lot worse, it may just be concidence. Any ideas?
same here have been hearing it for a few weeks. just put some new tires on about 2 months ago and replace front rotor on drivers side and put new pads on there is no noticeable pull of wheel like you would expect. i have checked pressure and it is ok might go and have tires re balanced but dont think that is a problem
My 2000 expedition is having the same problem. Is yours 4wd? I think it's the front differential slipping. There's also a vacuum motor that engages the 4WD on the fly that could be bad too.
Still working the issue. Glad to know that there are others out there with the same problem. . . . . . . hmmmmm. that didn't sound right. lol
At least there's more of us trying to figure it out than by ourselves.
I took my CV axles out and ran the truck around the neighborhood without them and no popping sound. I took the axles to a friend who said they were fine. I am sure it's not the hub assembly.
So that only leaves the vacuum motor, the differential, and the hub locks betweent the rear and front differentials.

Publication Date: January 15, 2004
FORD: 1998-2004 F-150
ISSUE:
Some 1998-2004 F-150 4X4 vehicles with a one piece drive shaft may exhibit a clunking or grunting noise and/or a shudder sensation from the driveline. The condition will typically occur during light to moderate acceleration from a stop and/or braking. This may be caused by the slip yoke not sliding smoothly on the transfer case output shaft splines.
ACTION:
To service, lubricate the slip yoke with Teflon Grease (D2AZ-19590-A). Refer to the following Service Procedure.
Both are avaiable in the NEW FULL TEXT TSB's on this site . Check out the announcements on the General Automotive Discussion Forum.

So has anyone narrowed this down. I'm having the same thumping with the light acc or slowing to a stop. It doesn't get harder but faster as I accelerate. I don't notice it when up to speed though.
I had the same problem on my 97 F150. It was the left front hub bearing was shot. Replaced it and rides smooth and quite again. I also have a slight shudder from the driveline. I did grease the splines a while ago and the noise is coming back.
The reason why you don't feel it when up to speed is that the driveshaft is spinning fast enough to slide over the rough spot on the splines. The best thing to do is grease the splines with teflon grease. I will say this it may last a long while for some, and other people it lasted 2 weeks.

Mine does seem to be coming from the wheels. This is in 2wd. Did any of you replace the hub bearing yourself or take it to a shop?
skilife, you mention the driveshaft. Are you speaking of the axles for the front or the driveshaft into the front differential? I'm at work now & don't have my manual for reference.

thumping noise diagnosed
Well, my husband lubed the slip yoke but that did not help the noise. Then I started getting another noise when accelerating to high speeds, like merging onto the freeway, this one seemed to be coming from near the wheels. Anyway, I took it to a mechanic and he said that the thumping was coming from my transfer case and my seal to the transfer case was leaking. Also, when he drained the transfer case, there were pieces of metal in the fluid. He put in a new transfer case ($2,300) labor was only $485 and the part was $1,785 (ouch). He is still working on the new noise, he looked at the axels, but said that wasn't the problem so he is going to check it out more next week. The worst part is now I have to rent a car to go on vacation!!!
