I dont know much about the 7.3's, but my buddy got a 01 the other day now he is looking to get some more power out of it. I told him that I wouldn't use any other programmer that dosent offer custom tunes. In my world of the 6.0 a sct is the only way to go. I have seen that they do tunes for the 7.3 and recomended that to him, but what is the best one to get for his truck. Also what other mods are good for these trucks. He says he wants to end up with about 500 hp or so when hes done. so im asking the experts on this one. thanks for your time.
My vote goes to anyone using a TS based chip... Be it Swamps, Power Hungry Performance, Gearhead Auto, Beans Diesel, Tony Wildman, Diesel Inovations...
With a TS chip you can go to any number of vendors and get tunes...
There are several custom tuners out there that most of their owners are very happy with. By far the most popular here(and my favorite) is DP as mentioned by Jim. There are also PHP, Swamps, and Tony Wildman. IF I were to ever switch from DP ( a very big IF) I would without a doubt be going to Tony Wildmans tunes. I have respect for several posters here that run his tunes and are very happy with them as well as his customer service. As for mods, there is a link at the top of the forum that lists all of the common mods. 500HP is not impossible on these trucks but it takes a pretty decent amount of coin in order to do it. In '01 some of the trucks still had forged rods, but some had been switched over to PMR's and if that's the case, more than likely, his motor won't live long at that HP level.
EDIT: Man...I type slow. Sorry, they already covered it.
Agreed -- if you're in Texas, get Tony's tunes..... Heck, it's worth driving up to get personal service and you can try a few out before you leave. I live a few miles from him and it was nice to take a few trial runs before locking them in, so to speak. Oh, and FREE REBURNS, too...
I had an SCT X-Cal2 with the canned tunes and I was impressed with it until I bought myself a DP-Tuner last Christmas. DP-Tuner has my vote...whether it's towing, everyday driving, or showing someone who's boss, I have yet to be disappointed by Jody's programming. My friends and neighbors (I live in a mostly Ford neighborhood) are even blown away by the difference...
