im lost
ive just finished a fresh rebuild on at 428 with r code cobra jet heads and ive got a few problems. im running a msd pro billet dist. with the 6al box ive tried to different ingintion boxes and when idle ay 1000rpm my ign. timing is 23degrees on my dial style timing light and when i try to back it down the engine dies at anything below 23degrees and i know for sure my timing mark on the crank is correct also when i was running it a 23degrees and brought it up to about 4000rpm the cap blew apart into a billion pieces and i dont know why the dist is only a few years old and only has maybe 3000 miles on it i replaced the cap rotor and checked the dis gear timing still off and i can hear a ticking sound in the cap but see no wear in the cap where it would be hitting anybody have any idea what the crap i got going on

Okay, have you tried using a factory distributor without any boxes? Also, the outer ring on your balancer may have rotated, so your timing may not be accurate anyway. How is the rubber on your balancer? They can be rebuilt for about a hundred bucks. The ticking sounds like the cap is not sitting right OR when the distributor blew up it threw one of the advance springs off of the counter weight beneath the breaker plate. Does you Current distributor have vacuum advance or mechanical? Bruce
