NCBONDSMAN The oil is fresh ( 0 miles and only a couple hours idle time). every time it dies the HPOP is low sometimes about 1 " or 2" below normal level. I really am leaning toward what you said about changing the LPOP. How easy is it?? what special tools are needed? Did you have to drain the oil to change LPOP.
You don't need to drain the oil. You will need a fan clutch wrench and harmonic balancer puller. Then just basic tools. It is really easy. You can leave the radiator in place but put a piece of cardboard on the inside so you don't go scraping knuckles and tools on it.
Remove the belt
remove the fan and its clutch (that big nut behind the fan)
remove the crankshaft bolt that holds the balancer on.
remove the balancer
remove the oil pump.
I am about ready to push the thing off a cliff at at the moment. I just got done changing the LPOP with a new Melling pump. Put it all back together and started right up ( cold) let it idle till it warmed up ( 1/2 hour) ran fine oil press.36 psi. as it warmed up oil drops to 18 psi and truck dies and no restart. HPOP res. Low. completely lost on what to try next. ANYONE ?????? !!!!!!! filled the res. still no start.
Check your oil level/quality. I wonder if your ipr is sticking open, not allowing it to build pressure. I am at a loss on this one. If you are not pushing the oil to the hpop, it could be a crack in the pickuptube (I heard that is pretty common). You can check this by raising the rear of the vehicle and trying to start it. If it fires and runs with the rear raised, then when you lower it, it dies shortly after....your pickup tube is cracked and the pump not pushing the oil up to the hpop.
I have it idling right now. just waiting to see it get up to reg temp. and if it dies again. If it was a crack in the tube I don't think it would run ok at all would it??
That would be a great guess... If it dies when warm, IPR orings (had that happen once). Guess I got so wrapped up in the lpop issue, I didn't even think of that.. Hope it works out for you.. Keep us posted..
It idled for about 2 hrs last night then died again. Went to the stealership and got a IPR o-ring kit $53.00 for 2 o-rings and 50 cents worth of nut and washer. "Stealership" was never more fitting. Sunday will change O-rings and repost.
Well finally after a week and a half of beating my head against the wall with the mysterious problems of my truck. Going and installing new oil, new LPOP. Still not fixing the problems. I went and changed the IPR o-rings and it finally fixed the problems. No more dying when its warm. I had changed the IPR about 6 years ago and I was sure it was not this because the first IPR i got about 130,000mi out of before it took a dump. When I took this IPR out everything still looked OK. The only thing I noticed was it was kinda corroded on the shaft and the back up o-ring had a vary small ( about the size of head of pin) piece missing where it is spliced so you can get it on the shaft. I put it all back together and as I let it warm up I noticed my oil pressure did increase about 4-6 psi when fully warmed up. The idle is a little smoother. So far now it's still running.
Thanks NCBONDSMAN for the tip.
Glad to be of some help.... I know how frustrating these things can be... These forums are great at figuring out how fix our trucks without plunking down the dough to go to a stealership... Let us know if that is the final fix for your problems.
