New Melling installed, builds oil pressure and starts, but reservoir on the HPOP will not stay full. Even when I fill it and let it sit, it drains back down. Not sure what to do. Gotta get a new HPOP I guess. GFD
Could be Adam, but after talking at length with Mike for a good hour between texting and actual talking, seems I have a low pressure oil problem. I am going to get a mechanical gauge on it tomorrow evening and see what my pressure is. I also have the task of flushing my oil rails in the head. He is of the mind that there is still a good amount of brass in those rails and it's causing issues on my low pressure check valves that keep the low pressure side built up.
I know Glenn. This truck isn't letting me win right now. I'm pulling the cooler too and redoing it. There are two check valves down there and one on the top of the block. So, I have my work cut out for me the next few days. My guess is one of those is hung open. I'll find out. New Orings for the cooler and be cleaning it up. It's a dang mess.
Awe man, I'm sorry Byron. Really don't know what to say. As painful as it is, just gotta keep digging and trudge on. I know how much it sucks. Trust me, I have been there!!
Edit: I would also be curious of your LPOP oil pressure numbers.
Damn dude this truck is like a spiteful ex wife......is it easier to flush or just replace the rails?
Definitely flush...gotta pull each rail plug and flush with diesel according to Mike, from whom I spent a good time getting an education on the low pressure oil system.

Bryon, what did the stock lpop look like and did it have any brass filing in here? Did it mess up the front cover?
Glenn, the old LPOP "looked" fine and had no brass on it. It just had very clean oil. The only thing it seemed is that the outer gear had room on the housing to move around a little bit and the new one did not so much. It did not seem to touch the front cover, but more on that in a minute.

yeah, with both rail plugs removed and diesel fuel poured through them.
Alright guys, thanks for following along and commenting. Here is where I am at thus far. I have to test oil pressure tomorrow and verify that I do, in fact, have an issue. I think it is low pressure related, but I am going to verify like a smart wrencher and not the stupid one I have been for the last week. If I have zero to very little pressure, my next step will be to check the relief valves and clean if they seem ok or replace. If they are ok, I am going to pull the LPOP and recheck the timing cover, and this is where it could get bad. If the timing cover is cracked or has a groove in it where the LPOP sits, it has to be replaced. That is worst case scenario. I am already planning for this because well, it's just been that way since owning this spiteful ex-wife as Bryan calls it. Ill never get a poorly maintained truck again.
I am really trying to not let this get me down, but I am having a hard time. It's one thing if this just reared its head, but I have been dealing with this since El Paso, so basically three weeks of the same issue and its getting worse. Lots of time and money and still no resolution. Ah well, its just a truck I guess. I am not one to regret things, but I highly regret selling Ruby. That was just a dumb decision all the way around.
So, check oil pressure, and go from there. If its bad, like I think it is, it either one of three relief valves or timing cover.
Hey Byron,
You probably don't want to hear this or maybe you have thought of it but what about picking up a donor truck with a decent motor and swapping it out? Between what you're planning to do new, what you've already changed and the fact that you trust the odor as much as a wet fart, gotta be worth a thought eh?

Bryan, have you been listening to me talk to my wife? LOL I definitely want to buy a donor truck. I just have no where to keep one right now and storage is stupid expensive out here. It might be in the cards here in a few months though. I at least want to get an engine I can reseal and rebuild if needed. I just have nowhere to put it except outside under a tarp LOL!! Can you say redneck?
Small update here...tested low pressure finally the proper way.
the results--
Cranking pressure--0
Idling--50 when it first starts
Falls off after about 10 seconds to zero and dies
Looks like I might have a check valve problem. My timing cover looked good at the LPOP install. It was smooth and no groove. I guess I'll pull the cooler first since I am having to install new Orings anyways. From my limited understanding and education, there are three valves. Two in the cooler head and one in block under the HPOP. I'll save that for last.
Good luck man, I know that engine is in a really healthy state even though your having problems, **** it even smelled good, most of our work trucks and the Mule included smell like **** lol.... you'll get it no need for a new mill just yet. What's the possibility of the pick up foot being clogged with sludge since the original owner used Lucas?
