Question Help...loose axle

Help, this is driving me nuts. I need my truck up and running ASAP because I have no other form of transportation. I have the 8.8 in my truck with the notorious C-clips. The problem is that when the axle is installed, it give me LOTS of side to side movement. I found this out after the C-clip decided to work it's way out going down the road and the axle almost came out of the truck. I pulled the axle and the bearing is fine, so I think. No burn marks or wear compaired to the new bearing and it still turns freely. What could be causing my axle to do this? I have to make due with this axle until I can fork over the money for a 9" to put in the rear.

Pull the cover off and check the pin. If this is worn, it can allow the axles to travel. Also, check the axle ends. Check the side gears- if they are loose, you could probably just put washers behind them, and fix it that way. There are special washers for these, they may be called shims, they are curved and fit in between the side gear and case.

The side gears? You mean the spider gears or the ring gear? That BIG pin that holds in the spider gears isn't worn either. Thanks

Help...loose axle

The side gears - the ones inside the diff carrier that the spider gears mesh with. Each of the 4 gears is supposed to have a shim between it and the case. The end of each axle is supposed to ALMOST touch the pinion shaft, which should be perfectly round in the middle. The pinion shaft is supposed to hold the axleshafts too far outboard for the C-clips to fall out of the recesses in the side gears. There's a pic in this album:

And steve gets it on the rebound! Actually, some of these pins did have a small notch in them, but either way, the pin is supposed to keep the axles from travelling to far in, allowing the c-clips to drop out. The metal at the end of the axle is known for fatigueing, that's why you couldn't pay me to run a c-clip axle. In fact, it takes me some convincing to run a semi-float axle of any type.
