Hey guys I have always been nuts on maintaining my vehicles. I'd like to change my trans fluid on my 07 Explorer V8. It has the 6R tranny. I know the trans fluid is SP and it has 100k service life or so but I want to do it anyway. I've talk to my friends who are service techs and they've informed me that they are not able to flush these transmissions. I do tow my snowmobile trailer with this truck sometimes and I just want to take care of it. I know these are down by dropping the pan down then filling thru the tube on rt side. Anyone attempt this at home yet? Any info would be appreciated...
Ok for starters, I don't think there is a fill tube. I could be wrong as I have not worked on that trans, but I know even earlier than that Ford eliminated the fill tube.
You will definitely want the fluid from the dealer. Ford may consider it to have a 100k service life, but it is not fluid breakdown that is the problem that ultimately leads to failure, it is breakdown of the friction surfaces that in turn results in fluid contamination. Even in suspension it acts like a sandblaster to the internal parts. So I agree, the fluid should probably be changed at least twice that often.
You should probably get some kind of pump because I think you will need one to add fluid.
buy your fluid in bulk (5gal pail), connect a pump to the return line and use it to replenish the fluid that is pumped out by the transmission pump (engine running cooler line in catch bucket).

Thank you all. That's a good idea but to my knowledge there won't be much that comes out due to the thermostat. Is that correct?
