Transmission Service

My new to me 2000 F250 4x4 has not had any transmission problems but I dont know if the trans has ever been serviced. Now has 70K on it.

I have a good trans shop near me. What should I have them do? Filter change? Trans flush? Transfer case? Front and rear differentials?

Also I have the 4R100 trans so isnt there some kind of special fluid that I need to use?

Thanks a lot for your help

Should just use mercon and i would just do the transmission flush, leave the filter, its more just a screen and doesn't really require replacement. Front and rear diffs should be ok till over 100K assuming they've never been submerged in water

Were it me... I'd go with synthetic fluids in both. Do the differentials as well.

i agree. make sure they use mercon, not mercon V or a mercon/mercon V fluid. i would also suggest going with a synthetic fluid, mobil 1 is good. i would do the x-fer case as well and use synthetic it that too. if you are any kind of wrench you can do the x-fer case your self, it takes 2 quarts of mercon (same as the trans)

No telling if the previous owner got water in the diff.s. Play it safe man! If you change the diff. fluid yourself its SUPER cheap insurance!

mobil 1 makes a full syn. mercon/dextron III (mercon and dextron III are the same thing) but just because its mercon does not mean its syn.

I believe you would use Mercon "SP" if you wanted synthetic, My 05 torqeshift calls for this and I could only find it at the dealer.Flush, new external filter and 15 qt "SP" for $99.99 from the dealer was a great deal.

Mercon sp is only for the torqueshift, do not use it in a 4r100.

I would get it all changed. The trans flush, the differentials and the transfer case. If you don't know what was done to the truck or what the truck was used for before you bought bought it I would have it changed for peace of mind. I keep all the reciepts on all the work done so when I trade the truck in they know what has been done.

Fluid too many choices

Ok, I am going to have the trans flushed, and fluid changed, and the transfer case changed. I am going to leave the filter in and leave the differentials alone.

I have the 4r100 so I use the Mercon III fluid? Is this available at China Mart?

I'd do everything, particularly if it was a used truck. In the end, it's cheap insurance. It payed off for me. My first SD was a used 99 SD CC V10. I did all the fluids when I bought it, and then complete driveline servicing every 2 years or about 40 kmiles. When I had trans case "noises", receipts for that regular maintenance shut the warrantee adjuster up and I got the new trans case without question.
