i'm going to change the fluid/filter in the trans today and I need some input on a couple rumors/myths maybe about doing this. I know for a fact that the fluid has never been changed, and i've heard that doing it now could cause problems. someone told me that the trans becomes dependent on the fluid it has in it after a while and changing it could cause the trans to burn up within a few months. is there any truth to this? Is there something I should or shouldn't do while changing the fluid and filter?
I did mine with 74K miles and it was shuttering pretty bad. After the change, it cleared up and works great. The bottom of the pan(with the magnet) was caked with metallic. Really scrubbed it up, new filter and fluid. Presto-chango.
Re-use the rubber gasket, don't hurt it. Clean the surfaces really good, don't use a scraper that could gouge it. Brake clean and rags only. Snug it evenly, don't crank the bolts.
its an e4od trans with 226000 miles on it... the fluid is still kinda red, but I had problems with it the other day and it smells a little burnt now, I have to replace the vss, psom and something else to fix the issue but i wanted to change the fluid also... i figured it was an old wives tale but wanted to make sure. I'm not sure where to find a motorcraft filter either. most parts stores around here carry pro-king kits for this, would i need to get one from a dealer? I don't think saving the rubber gasket is going to be possible with that many miles on it either, we'll see i guess
