Trans fluid in auto trans

My buddy has a 2001 4X4 Automatic 7.3L. What trans fluid should we add. He always has the service dealer doing the maintanance. But today we noticed it needs a top up.

Mercon V is what you need.

In the manual it says not to use Mercon V. and I have read that it is OK. Why the conflick?

Mercon is no longer being produced and Mercon V has been reformulated to be used in applications where Mercon was used. Plain Mercon is now very, very hard to find.

You can still buy Dexron-III/Mercon at OReillys & Auto Zone.. (Valvoline).. which is the original stock trans oil.. I just bought some a month ago and changed my auto trans..

That's good to know.

I used Valvoline Merc V when I did my tranny a three years ago.
