Hello everybody,
Dont mind me cuz this is a little bit of a stupid question but, my friend has a 90 F150 2x4 but we cant tell how to find out what engine is in it! 351 or 302?
Open the hood. The intake plenum (upper intake manifold) will either say "5.0 Liter" (302) or "5.8 Liter" (351) on it.
If it for whatever reason doesn't have a stamped plenum, and it's the original engine, then look at the 8th digit of the VIN--H is a 5.8L/351cc and N is a 5.0L/302cc.
Beyond that, there are ways to tell them apart based on the deck height/width and so on, but I don't know those off the top of my head.
The EGR tube on the 351 pulls exhaust from the passenger side exhaust manifold. The lower thermostat bolt can be reached with a socket and straight extension on a 351, but is blocked by the water pump/timing cover on a 302.
ACTUALLY the "5.0" wont say 5.0 if its the orginal manifold, it will just say fuel injection. the 5.8l will say it however..., another quick way to tell is check the emissions tag under the hood
you know i thought that was the case, cause i'm almost positive my buddys 92 bronco actually says 5.0 on it, but i knew if they did do that, it wast till 92 up that they did, so i didnt want to say anything till i knew for sure, cause otherwise id have just added to the confusion. also, someone could have swapped one from a 5.8L, or a mustang...
Your right someone could have swapped motors at some point. The Mustang and Crown Vic intakes are different, so it probably still has the truck intake.
