My Ford book says, "The quickest way to block identification is the casting number and date code found above the starter on the righthand side of the block...." It should read something like: D4AE-6015-AA-10. The codes are as follows:
So the above block mentioned in the text is a '75-'81 351W. I don't see anything mentioned about a change in the oil pans and it looks like they should interchange.
look at the width of the intake manifold. The 351 is a couple of inches wider. Compare it to an engine you know, or I can measure the width of my engines if you need me too. The width diffrence is very noticable when comparing the two engines
Your missing the first 2 letters which would give you the decade of the block and I don't see anything with an ED, but I do show the following:
D2AE-6015-EA is a 351C HO manufactured between '71-'74 with a 4-bolt main.
D2AE-6015-DA which is a 351C with a 2-bolt main manufactured from '72-'74
I'm guessing someone dropped in a 351C HO and you've got a real live rare monstor on your hands.
The HO 351C had upwards of 310 HP and could be running as high as 10.5:1 compression.
So much for the book!! I checked my block and it was listed as D9AE-6015-ED. Mine is a re-manufactured 351W and I measured the pan. It has 6" centers on the bolts on the back end where the deep sump is. Now I really don't know what to tell you.
Oops, screwed up again. Yeah, the pan I measured is 6" across on the hump, but the pan I measured is a front sump. The rear of the pan measures 6 3/4" center to center on the bolts.
Slik, is that front sump 351W oil pan in good condition and for sale? I will need to get one for my '78 when my motor is ready to go in. Also, does your book decode block casting number (F4TE-6015-AA13)? Lifter valley casting (WCP351).
The front sump oil pan is a Miloden and it is brand new. Never had oil in it. It has a little scratch and dent on the front right. Send me an e-mail and I'll send you a cost (slikness(No Email Addresses In Posts!)).
351's have a support cast in by the distributor hole, 302's don't. As you stare at the front of the engine, it's a triangular support that goes from the intake mating surface down to the machined surface for the distributor. Kind of tough to tell unless you have a 302 and 351 sitting side by side but thought it may help.
I'm new and I know this info is late but here it goes: The 351 has a higher deck height. On the 302 the heads sit almost on top of the water pump. On the 351 there is about an inch extra of block above the water pump. Hope this helps.
Has anyone figured out exactly what this engine is? I am in the same boat. Litterally. I am trying to identify the Ford engine in my 24' Flybridge Fishing Boat. The block number above the starter reads D9AE-6015-ED-16.
Oilpans do not interchange between the 351W and 302. The 351's larger rear main cap forced a change in the pan's rear radius that fits over the rear cap.
