noticed that on the inside of the intake before the MAF its a little oily.
i dont have any running problems at the moment , idles fine , pulls great when i need it to.
so, should i clean the MAF while the air filter is out or just leave well alone ?
is this just a case of removing the sensor and spraying it with an electrical contact cleaner. ?
are they quite hardy in the excursion as I had to change 4 of them when i owned a impreza as they kept failing.
I would clean it and keep it clean - this is one of the reasons why a lot of car manufacturers warn against oiled filter elements. A dirty MAF can lead to drive-ability problems and even lower mpg's. You should be able to find intake cleaner - sometimes auto parts stores even have cleaners which are marked specifically to clean MAF sensors. Good luck and make sure you don't over oil that filter.
Not sure how to do this on the Ex, as I've never tried to clean the MAF on mine, but on my 95 GT, I have to clean it fairly frequently (I don't oil the filter very heavy, but for some reason my MAF sensors get dirty very quickly).
On the 95, I pull the MAF sensor out, and clean the two wires with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. Very gentle hand, and you can get the entire wire clean. Not sure about spray cleaners' effectiveness.
I would clean it also, and infact I would go all the way to the throttle body and check that out also. After purchasing mine, I def cleaned it and then while in there looked at the TB and saw how gummed up it was. Even seemed to have a better throttle response after cleaning. I use the MAF sensor cleaner, and yes you will need to take it out for cleaning, that why I say to look at the TB at the same time.
