Well... after 18 years of great service my engine damper (harmonic balancer) decided to take a well deserved rest. Now i could use some advice: Is there any upgrade to the OEM available? how is the replacement procedure? do i need any special tools?.
on edit: some might find this info useful, it's about the engine front cover, but describes the procedure to remove and reinstall the harmonic balancer
Well, i started yesterday, got the pulley out but the balancer is giving me a lot of trouble, i manage to take the bolt (11/16SAE) and washer out using two ratchets to counter the engine turning, then mounted the Harmonic Belancer Extractor i bought and started tightening the center bolt (wich i cleaned and lubbed before)... Well, it went inside until it got so tight it started to turn the engine again... I guess i'll have to use the two ratchets again tomorrow... Any ideas to make this easier?.
^^^That could work too ,with the tool I posted you just have to be careful not to grab the damper (Harmonic balancer) from the "outside" you have to place the puller in the smaller part of the damper or else you could damage it (no problem if you are going to replace it anyway though).
Thx for the help MCA, i nailed it and pulled the thing out, it was actually pretty straightforward, a quick look at the new balancer gave me the understanding i needed. Also, the seals were blown, so yes, it was a replace (still, the balancer body came out in great shape, i didn't hit it once)... The bad news: the noise didn't go away entirely, and i already ruled out the pulley bearings as possible causes... so i think i'm down to the engine... and that's a bad thing.
