Alternator bearing

Hey guys, this monday i found this horrible noise coming from the engine... My first thought was a pulley bearing, yet none of them at the front appeared to be the cause, and standing in front of the bay it sounded like it came from the engine itself (which would be really bad news). Well, i parked the truck until today and i went to check if i could find the cause. I used a mech's stethoscope at the engine and found nothing strange, turned the engine off and touched the pulleys to feel if any was getting hotter than the others... no dice... Then took the belt off and tried every pulley by hand, all worked ok, yet when i turned the Alternator's it flashed a little spark every now and then (that was just a hint, i wasn't sure). To finally rule out the engine, i turned it on without the belt (that would leave all the pulleys out of the equation). Glady, it worked fine and made no strange noises. I cleaned several pulleys and placed the belt back, and turned the engine on once again, this time keeping my attention at the alternator, enough said, it made several spark noises and suddendly, i saw a cap flying of its back. It turned out to be the bearing at the back of the alternator, it was destroyed and losing shrapnel all over, take a look:

Now, if any of you know either the part number of the measures of this bearing it would be of great help (i'll take what's left of the bearing to the store, but i like to be sure of what i'm looking for).

I hate to say it,but your best bet is to just replace the alternator.Im sure someone out there knows what the bearing part numbers are,but it will likely take time to get the answer,AND then locating them. Not to mention the hassle of taking it apart to replace them.I say "them" because you really need to do both at the same time. After seeing this one,the front cant be far behind.

Thx for the reply, the front one has been replaced already, and i already took appart the alternator (3 connectors off, 3 bolts, some hammer tapping, easy job). And there are several bearing-specialty stores around here, so finding the right one won't be an issue. I would love to replace the alternator if i came by a 3G, but atm money is tight...

If you can remove it any bearing store can match it by the shaft, outside and width sizes. Most ball bearings are metric sizes if you can mic it yourself a Napa store would probably have it or could get one. If you can get one that is made in Japan or Germany not China.

Hey guys, here is the deal: since the bearing "exploded", all that's left in the axis is the internal race, i can't place any pulling device behind it to pull it out, so i would like to hear what ideas you have, or if anyone was in the same situation, which procedure was followed to remove it.

That is why they make bearing pullers.

There wasn't enough space and the race wasn't big enough to give that kind of extractor a grip. Anyway, i had it done and the new (japanese) bearing pressed in, so i'm good to go, the alternator is already assembled and in place, i just need to put the belt back and reconnect the battery to give it a try. Thanks for all the responses.

Oh! also found out the alternator is actually a 3G, which is very good news (even though it's a 95A small case).
