New to the forum. Used to spend alot of time turning wrenches. Now I'm a service Tech for HVAC systems, so I'm a mechanical type.
Heard a thump/bang under the truck the other day and once in a while since. Crawled under to find a strange looking item loose. Looks like a small can, which seems to be solid, welded to a rotted clamp that was sliding up & down the exhaust pipe. Was wondering what the purpose of this item might be and how important it is. I noticed no hangers from the middle of the truck until behind the muffler, so I assume this was involved somehow.
Thanks for any input.
Thought it might be a weight of some type. I figured that maybe the exhaust was heavier on one side so it might keep it from trying to twist loose over time or break the welds. Should I try to get a replacement? It definitely looks like a dealer part.
Thanks for responding.
Ford did put them there for a reason. The exhaust can make vibrations and sounds at certain RPMs, the weights help control the issue. Not a huge problem, but a welder would be a good fix.
I had a noise from underneath this fall that sounded like a vibrating heatshield and was worries that the cat came apart (not sure if they still do that, they used to be ceramic & we'd hit 'em with a hammer & shake out the pieces
Truk went in for inspection & I asked them to tighten it. Noise came back a couple of wks ago and now the weight was loose. Not sure but I think the rattle is gone. Mybe it was the weight loose. I have a welding torch, (just have to teach myself how), but I don't know where it was mounted. Can I get a diagram of the exhaust or am I better off getting a Chilton;s Manual.
I'll be under my truck tomorrow. If I can find the camera I'll take a few pics. If not ill just do some measuring. I have a 99' 150 w/ 5.4 I'm assuming the exhausts are the same or at least similar.
Mine is about 14 - 15 inches in front of the muffler with it parallel to the ground on the inside of the pipe. Looking at it I really doubt that it matters if its exactly in the same place as before.
