Auto tranny trouble

I have a 99 Excursion that started acting up yesterday. The overdrive light started flashing & it won't shift from first. I went out today & started the truck & the light stayed off & it shifted fine one time & then repeated itself again with the light flashing & not shifting. I plow snow with this & after about 8 hours of plowing this happened.I let it thaw out real good & looked under it but couldn't find anything that looked loose or unhooked. If anyone has an idea of what may be causing this trouble. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Ideally the first step would be to check the trouble codes and see what the computer thinks is wrong.
However, if it was me, I think I would get a spray can of a good electrical contact cleaner, unplug the electrical connectors down at the trans and spray well with the cleaner. Re-connect and see how that goes.

Will unhooking the battery possibly reset the computer?

Yes, but that won't help any. Every time you turn the key off you reset the computer.

You need to read the codes to be able to fix what's wrong.

Well we ended up finally getting the Excursion in & the tranny clutches are wore out according to the trans shop. When we picked it up the light is not flashing & the truck is shifting just fine now. We were quoted $1800 to pull, rebuild & install it back in.
