I just bought a used '99 Expy EB 5.4l. We read in the manual all about calibrating the compass and setting the zone, etc. My compass works PERFECTLY in calibration mode, but when it goes off CAL, it's 90 degrees off (it says W when you're facing N).
Anyone have any other ideas on the compass? Also, my Trip estimator thingie doesn't change at all. Or rather, it changed by 0.1 between city and highway. It's off as far as our mathematical calculations. Do you think maybe my whole console is messed up?
Local Ford dealer quoted $60 for a new sensor (the box behind the mirror). Do you think this is something we can install ourselves?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jun-02 AT 09:31 PM (EST)]go to the search tab and type in the word "compass" it will bring up all the topics that has to do with the compass. hope that helps you out.
This may be a bit of help, I also posted the same post and the dealership fixed it. I think that the compass is pointed to true north not just north that may be those 90 deg. your are talking about. Hope this helps
Not unless you live in northern Canada! Somewhere between the top of Hudson bay and the north pole. In the lower 48 the most you will get between true and magnetic north is 18°, and that is on the West coast. Where I live there is less than 1 ° difference. Something is wrong with the unit. It's your truck, fix it or ignore it....
Here's my compass story-- In December of 2000, I drove from North Carolina to Miami, Florida and had my '99 EB Expy detailed under a metal awning. On the way back to NC, the compass started telling me I was headed south. For the next 16 months, it was off by 110 degrees. I tryed re-calibration, but to no avail. I took the module out and degaussed it. Still nothing.
Low and behold, I buy a replacement module from the dealer and before I can install it, the original compass goes back to working flawlessly.
Mine has the same problem. I have tried to recalibrate it, but it wont go into recalibration mode! I found the little hole, and hold the button down forever but nothing happens!!
