re-attaching frame bracket question

Got my frame back from the painter, looks great. I'll post a picture if/when the sun comes out and the snow melts.

Question: I know I need to use grade 8 bolts to re-attach all the mounts/brackets which were removed, but the rivets were an odd size. Do I use 5/16" bolts which have some play or do drill out the holes in the frame and mounts to use 3/8" bolts?

I drilled my out and used 3/8" grade 8 bolts. Seemed to be a tighter fit and added a little more strenth.

Drille them out. Anything bolt that needs it's strenght shouldn't ever be loose.

That's pretty much what I figured but wanted to make sure first.

THANKS!

You could re rivet it. On a different vehicle I just finished replacing over 110 bolts with rivets to return to original. In my case I had to plug weld about 70% of the holes and drill before re rivoting. Back when the vehicle was restored, a po had removed the magority of the rivets in the frame probably the rivots had become loose (early roads).

Note: the rivets were either 5/16 or 3/8"

110 bolts. Luckily I don't have nearly that many!

So the rivets were either 5/16 or 3/8. An 11/32 bit fits perfect so I'm guessing they were drilled a little oversized and the rivets expand.

Since I don't have very many to replace, I'm going the bolt route.
